Dr. Jung-A Lee’s contemplative organ solo setting of It Came Upon a Midnight Clear was composed for the Pacific Chorale’s acclaimed Carols by Candlelight concert series, under the direction of Maestro Robert Istad. The work received its world premiere on December 7, 2024, at Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Newport Beach, California.
Lee builds the piece around the hymn’s opening motive, weaving it throughout the texture to evoke a sense of anticipation, profound beauty, and yearning for peace — qualities that define this beloved Advent carol at its finest.
